RUDY Community Resource Foundation is a community-based resource organization created to help residents, individuals, and families navigate resources, understand their options, and identify the next appropriate step. We connect people with information, referrals, community resources, and practical support while treating every person and every situation with dignity and respect.
Why RUDY Exists
Sometimes help exists, but people simply do not know where to find it, who to call, what questions to ask, or what program may fit their situation. RUDY was created to help bridge that gap. Our purpose is not to promise that we can solve every problem, but to help people understand their options, locate appropriate resources, and figure out what comes next.
The Woman Behind the Name
RUDY Community Resource Foundation was created in honor of Yvonne “Rudy” Nelson, a woman whose life was rooted in family, friendship, service, and connection. Rudy loved her family deeply and was especially close to her three sisters and her brother. She loved her friends, and anyone who knew her knew how much she loved Max, her dog. Max was not simply a pet to Rudy–he was family,
Rudy and RUDY’s founder, Traci D. Warr-Haskell, met as freshmen at Chicago Vocational High School in September 1981. What beqan as a teenage friendship grew into a bond that lasted for more than three decades and became family. Their lives, families, memories, milestones, laughter, and experiences remained connected throughout the years.
For most of her adult life, Rudy worked as a Chicago 311 operator, helping residents find information, services, departments, and resources. That work was only one part of who she was, but it reflected something that came naturally to her: helping people find direction when they did not know where to beain.
What RUDY Means
RUDY stands for Residents United for Dignity & You. The name honors Rudy’s legacy while defining the work of the organization today: helping people navigate real-life situations with information, resources, referrals, and community connections.
